Trigger Pull: The Ruger Explorer Youth Break Barrel Pellet Rifle has a fairly light trigger, there is some initial take up with a smooth almost undetectable break or release point.

Accuracy: With 6 grain lead pellets (on the lighter side), I was able to get a 5 shot chronograph average velocity of 495 FPS. Using heavier 7-8 grain pellets the velocity slowed down a bit to around 400 FPS. In terms of accuracy, the rifle performed well getting about a 1-inch, 10 shot grouping on my paper target setup 30 feet down range.

Build Quality: The Ruger Explorer Youth is not an expensive air rifle and is more or less an entry level spring piston pellet shooter. That said, it is built fairly well with a metal receiver, barrel and trigger setup. The modern looking stock is polymer and the steel barrel is coated in a synthetic soft plastic to help with long term durability. The real fiber optic sight is plastic so you will have to be careful with it as it does protrude a bit from the air rifle.

Realism: Since the Ruger Explorer Youth is not a replica, realism is not really a factor here. It does look like a gun though, so treat it as if it was a real, because most people will not know the difference. Always transport and store any airgun safely and discreetly.

Pros:

  • Really great looking air rifle with a modern look to it
  • Finish is very durable with its polymer stock and plastic/rubber coated barrel
  • Fully adjustable fiber optic sights are easy to sight in and use
  • Receiver is notched for ring mounts so you can add an optical sight or red dot to it
  • Trigger is fairly light, just need some break in time with it
  • Cocking effort is fairly easy at 16.5 pounds
  • Great size gun for all ages
  • Power and accuracy were good for an entry level air rifle

Cons:

  • The trigger break/release point is a bit unpredictable, but this is a likley just a break-in issue and will become more consistent over time
  • You have to remember to push that safety in with ever shot
  • Dovetail optics rail is only compatible with dovetail accessories

Comments: The Ruger Explorer Youth is marketed as a youth air rifle but in reality it would be great fun for all ages. The trigger guard is nice and open and allows for large fingers which is not always the case with airguns designed for smaller individuals. The overall quality you get with this entry level price tag is very good and in terms of performance, you definitely get your money's worth.

Solid air rifle

Handles really nice. Weights less than your typical air gun but doesn't feel like a youth gun. Stock fits nice on the shoulder. Great gun for the price.

Great value

Bought this gun for my grandson to teach him gun safety. I was very happy with the quality of the finish and overall size. The barrel is easy to break and I like the auto safety ( you need to fully break the barrel for it to engage). The gun disappoints with accuracy. I tried adjusting to no avail. My grandson loves it and overlooks the accuracy. Shipping was fantastic and fast. The price was the best I could find.

Super accurate rifle

I'm a smaller guy and thought I’ll just buy a youth airgun and 495 FPS is all I need to be getting anyways and even though I’m pretty stocky and can easily handle a full size firearm it’s just nice sometimes to have the right fit into your shoulder how far away you gotta reach etc. Let me just say this thing looks way cooler in real life and with a scope on it looks all special ops lol! Honestly though right outta the box even with just the true glow sights no scope I was shooting actual dimes and little tiny army men from over ten yards away to the point it was getting boring. Super accurate little rifle and well built, doesn’t feel cheap, I’ve put about 700 pellets through and it’s only got better. Cocking it is effortless since it’s a youth rifle, kinda nice takes no effort at all. My only beef is the safety doesn’t engage when you cock it but it did for first few days lol. Not sure whats going on there lol. Not enough to make me not say this gun isn't worth 100 bucks that’s for sure. If your smaller built or a youth, this gun is tons of fun. Made my whole summer, I thought of buying a way nicer rifle like a Diana, but I’d still keep this one, it’s that good! I wouldn’t sell it, perfect for indoor shooting like the basement or garage.
