Trigger Pull: Both the Umarex AirJavelin and Umarex AirSaber require that the bolts be pulled back to fire, featuring a single-action trigger. The trigger of the Umarex AirJavelin is not as short, light, or crisp as that of the Umarex AirSaber, which notably feels of higher quality.

Accuracy: Testing the accuracy of these devices will be a new experience for me. Based on information from this year's SHOT Show, I anticipate highly accurate performance from both the Umarex AirJavelin and Umarex AirSaber Archery CO2 and PCP Arrow Rifles. Testing the Umarex AirSaber may depend on my ability to establish a safe shooting range, but having ample space should allow me to test both.

Build Quality: Overall, the construction quality of both the Umarex AirJavelin and Umarex AirSaber is very solid. The Umarex AirJavelin, while primarily made of plastic and relatively lightweight, is well-crafted overall. The Umarex AirSaber, however, uses more metal in its construction and feels significantly more premium, though it is nearly twice as expensive.

Realism: Neither the Umarex AirJavelin nor the Umarex AirSaber Archery CO2 and PCP Arrow Rifles replicate any existing firearms. They are primarily intended for hunting and pest control.

Pros:

  • These are the only non-PAL airguns in Canada with sufficient power for medium to large game hunting.
  • Competitively priced in a unique market segment.
  • Arrows are front-loaded, eliminating archer's paradox during aiming.
  • Arrows include field tips but can be swapped for broad tips for hunting.
  • Features cross bolt safeties, pistol grips for better control, and excellent fit and finish, especially on the AirSaber.
  • The AirJavelin uses an 88-gram CO2 cartridge for ease of use, while the AirSaber uses PCP for enhanced power suitable for larger game.
  • The AirJavelin includes a white dot front sight and a fully adjustable rear peep sight, M-Lock for accessories, and an adjustable AR-style rear stock with a rubber buttplate for comfort.
  • The AirSaber features Picatinny rails for scopes and other accessories.

Cons:

  • The base model of the AirSaber lacks a scope or sights.
  • Limited shots per 88 gram CO2 cartridge for the AirJavelin; a pump is needed for the PCP AirSaber.
  • Arrows are expensive, so accuracy is crucial.

Comments:

The Umarex AirJavelin and Umarex AirSaber stand out as unique in the Canadian market as legal “firearms” capable of effectively taking down small to large game without a firearms license (PAL), thanks to their design not exceeding the 500 fps speed limit but surpassing the 4.2-foot pound energy limit. This is advantageous for Canadians without a PAL who wish to hunt or manage pests humanely. Umarex offers two versions: the more economical CO2-powered AirJavelin for smaller game, and the higher-quality PCP-powered AirSaber for larger game. Both options are excellent; the choice depends on your specific needs.

An "Inside" Review

If this review is too lengthy, then just take the 4 stars and leave it at that.  I have pointed out many undesirable observations below. However, I have some solutions to work with or around them. At a glance fresh, out-of-the-box, this arrow rifle has that high-tech feel to it with its long picatinny rail and with a butt stock that can be adjusted for its length of pull.  The body, with it being majority plastic, the finish is fair to good, and there is room for improvement.  Gaps could be more precise and many sharp edges could be more rounded. A closer hands-on experience revealed some undesirable observations: 1. The picatinny rail is NOT straight, somewhat curved from the shooter's view. -- The sights that came with this rifle really won't be accurate with this curved rail. -- The top of the rail is center-ridged so that scope mounts that require a flat top fit won't work. -- The slot spacing of this rail is also non-standard so that some unified one piece scope mount will not fit. 2. The arrow shroud, with the M-LOK slots, is somewhat flexible when a bipod is mounted. 3. The slide of the adjustable stock is somewhat sloppy. 4. The safety is too stiff. It makes a loud click on switching. 5. The hand grip is of a square shape somewhat uncomfortable to my hand. 6. The feel of the trigger is very undesirable. There are literally 4 stages to the trigger pull. -- 1st stage, the trigger pull is greeted with a free play. -- 2nd stage, it presents firmer spring tension but consistent. -- 3rd stage, it becomes even firmer with a certain mushiness until the trigger is stopped at a wall. -- 4th stage, it required a good hard pull at the "wall" to fire. The wall is very close to being bottomed out. 7. With my unit, the air shaft that the arrow mounts onto is somewhat skewed to the right causing the arrow to fly to the right with respect to the rifle's body line of fire.  At 10 yards it is causing a 4 to 5 inch sway to the right. Corrections... There isn't a lot I can do with item 1 (at first). I left items 2, 3, 4 & 5 as is. However with item 6 & 7, any corrections will require an "inside" look literally.  With the trigger issue (item 6) I opened the shell and inspected the concerned areas and determined that the firing mechanism requires too much rework I decided to leave it as is.   With item 7, I found the problem why the air shaft is skewed.  The air shaft with the firing valve mounts onto the two half shell inside an indentation on each half of the shell.  There is a gap on the indentation's rear left which gives some free movement to the firing valve.  The right half of the shell also presses the firing valve toward the rear left causing the air shaft skewing to the right.  I shimmed the gap on the indentation's rear left enough to bring the air shaft back to its intended straightness and reassembled the rifle.  Strangely, the curvy-ness of the picatinny rail (item 1) straightened somewhat after the air shaft correction. The arrow now flies very straight after the alignment. I fitted a red dot scope that will accommodate the ridge.  After this inside inspection and correction, this air-bow is much more precise. Some reviewers complained about (some while back) pricing. I would say my checkout price was somewhat lower and I am happy.  It's fortunate that the shaft skew can be corrected. With this model, I believe that Umarex could do some better quality assurance.  Better QA means less DIY for me.

Amazing technology !

I won't ever use another crossbow again, this is the future of crossbows. My father is getting older and didn't want a traditional crossbow due to the process of cranking it to fire an arrow. This co2 action is effortlessly simple, even a child could use this. 10/10 highly recommend any house hold to have for even survival purposes. Pro tip - Bullets break down over time, co2 and arrows won't. So you won't regret stocking up on these supplies due to no expiry.

No buyers regret

I found this to be another great offering from replica air guns. After watching many video reviews I was unable to hear a really bad thing about it so I dropped the order and I am glad I did. Some may think it is lacking in quality due to the weight but I think it adds to the versatility and you will see the quality once you shoot it. As I found it extremely accurate and I added a set of bi-pods and better optics to see what I could do with it. If you are using it for targets, I advise anyone to do the same. The Air Javelin is a weapon that deserves some extras so you can really see the capability. I did see one review regarding the price versus the U.S. version being $190.00. Well, if you put on the exchange rate, shipping in U.S. dollars and the duty, time to clear customs, RAG (with their free shipping on this price point) is a far better deal.

It’s great but it’s not worth the price tag in Canada

Giving the fact that this only cost $190 in the US and over $300 in Canada I feel like it should be made of a higher quality material.

Great unit. I bought two. When we get bored and can't go anywhere due to lockdown, we play darts with it using a paper dartboard, Lots of fun. I am looking forward to hunting with it.

For this Field Test Shooting Video I actually had to go outside and use my field so in order to have an appropriate amount of distance to properly test the Umarex AirJavelin Archery CO2 Arrow Rifle. My Indoor Airgun Shooting Range is only 30 feet long and my metal backstop was simply not usable for the arrows. Max FPS: 300 / 450 The Umarex AirJavelin and Umarex AirSaber Archery CO2 and PCP Arrow Rifles are very interesting in that they are really the only Canada legal “firearms” that can actually put down small, medium and even large game without requiring a firearms license (PAL). This is because they do not exceed 500 fps, they do exceed the foot pound energy limit of 4.2 foot pounds but since both of these rifles do not exceed the 500 fps limit they do not exceed both requirements to place them in the regulated firearms category that requires a firearms license. This is great news for anyone in Canada without a PAL license that wants to be able to hunt various game or take care of pests humanly. Umarex has also been kind enough to bring us two variations on this design. The Umarex AirJavelin more economical and easier to use CO2 powered version designed for small to medium sized game and the Umarex AirSaber higher quality PCP powered big brother version designed to be used even for larger game. Both are great, all you need to do is pick which one is right for you!
